Purchasing the Right Tile...

Material - There are a number of different materials you can choose from.  Ceramic, stone and glass are amongst the most popular, but each of these materials have many makes as well.  The vast selection makes choosing a tile more of an art than a science, but there are a few rules you can follow to ensure you make a good decision.  First off, think price.  If you want to spend $10 a square foot or less, ceramic is probably your best bet.  Don't rule out other materials, but concentrate on ceramic.  You will also want to think about durability.  Is your tile going outside, or in a shower, or is it going to be a backsplash in your kitchen?  Depending on what you are using your tile for, you will need to know it's hardness.  If you are concerned about your tile's durability, take a read over this article --  Hopefully it helps.

Shape and Color - The second consideration in purchasing the right tile is much more subjective.  You simply need to know what shape and color you want your tile to be.  Color is obviously a personal preference.  The only real rule here is to make sure it matches with it's surroundings.  Shape, while not overly important, can make a difference in price.  If you choose a shape that requires a lot of cutting, the installation price will go up.  Also, if you are working with a contoured surface (such as a shower floor), generally, smaller tiles work better because they give it a more rounded look.

Other Considerations - Tile is not the only expense.  Depending on the type of job, mortar and grout are almost always needed.  Retailers and contractors often have good suggestions for grout color when it comes to matching it with the tile, but you will want to think about this as well just in case you don't like their suggestions.
